5 Delicious Foods That Are Surprising Sources of Protein

When you think of protein, you typically think of a few commonly known items such as meat, eggs, nuts, or tofu. Sometimes, it gets boring if you rely exclusively on these common food items for everyday protein needs. So, here’s 5 delicious foods that are surprising sources of protein.

Artichoke hearts

Artichoke hearts actually have high protein. According to the nutrition experts, these fellows have about five grams of protein per cup. Add a cup of fresh or canned artichoke hearts into your pasta meal to give your dinner a healthy twist, or infuse them into a salad for a bit of crunchiness.

Seaweeds

You heard it right! Seaweed is an often overlooked source of protein with two to nine grams per cup (it varies amongst varieties of seaweed). However, it takes quite a bit of seaweed to get to that one-cup threshold, or as Shape.com puts it: "You’d have to eat 21 nori sheets to get the protein found in one 3-ounce chicken breast." If you don’t like the taste of seaweed, try crumbling nori sheets into salads or blended dips, like pesto, as a salt substitute.
