Basic Cooking Tips for People Who Used to Eat Out

Whether you live on your own in your one bedroom apartment or a busy parent, struggling to find some time and energy to prepare home-cooked meals can be such a bummer. At the end of a busy day, eating out or ordering in might feel like the quickest, easiest option. But convenience and processed food can be more expensive or negatively affect your health.

So, here are some basic cooking tips from us for people who used to eat out:

Keep it simple as much as possible

Getting started is not that hard if you keep it as simple as possible. You can steam or sauté some veggies, grill some fish or chicken, add some herbs, spices, or a healthy sauce. Simple cooking can be tasty and quick. Not to mention, it can be healthy too!

Find fresh, and healthy ingredients

We know that it’s hard to avoid sugary treats such as brownies, cakes, and cookies. But you need to understand that it won’t help your health on a long term basis. Additionally, adding too much sugar or salt can transform a healthy home-cooked meal into an unhealthy one. To make sure that your meals are good for you while making it tasty for your family or kids, you can start with healthy ingredients and flavor with spices rather than sugar or salt that can negatively impact those who eat.

Make substitutions for healthier meals

Instead of frying you can probably shift into grilling, you can also use your air fryer or maybe baking is a good choice too. You can try to replace salt with garlic or onion powder. Make sure to cut the sugar in most of your recipes by 1/3 to 1/2. Decrease the meat and increase the vegetables in stews and casseroles. Choose whole-grain versions of pasta and bread, and substitute whole-wheat flour for bleached white flour when you bake.

Replenish your staple foods

Ingredients such as rice, pasta, olive oil, spices, flour, and stock cubes are staples you’ll likely to use regularly. Keeping cans of tuna, beans, tomatoes and bags of frozen veggies on hand can be helpful in prepping up some quick meals when you’re busy or looking for a faster way of producing.
